The SGXR is characterized by a sequence of Paleozoic to Mesozoic sedimentary, metamorphic, and volcanic formations, predominantly oriented in a northeast direction. The oldest Xilinhot Metamorphic Complex, dates back approximately 459 million years (Ma) and includes mica schist, and biotite-bearing granitic gneiss. The SGXR is largely composed of extensive Permian-Triassic volcanic and sedimentary rocks, which include both marine-terrestrial and marine sedimentary formations. During the Middle to Late Jurassic (approximately 165 to 157 Ma) and continuing into the Early Cretaceous (around 137 to 130 Ma), Mesozoic depositional processes and volcanic events significantly influenced the SGXR.
Mineral deposits in the SGXR exhibit a regional zoning pattern, typically divided into four geographic zones: Huanggangliang-Ganzhu'ermiao, Xilinhot-Huolin'guole, Tuquan, and Tianshan. The Xilinhot-Huolin'guole region hosts Pb-Zn-Ag deposits such as Bairendaba, Weilasituo, and Hua'aobaote, while the Huanggangliang-Ganzhu'ermiao region contains Pb-Zn-Ag deposits like Daqingshan, Dashishan, Yaoertu, and Bianjiadayuan. The Tianshan region is characterized by porphyry Mo-Cu mineralization, with notable deposits like Longtoushan and Yangchang. The Tuquan area hosts the recently identified Fuxingtun Pb-Zn-Ag deposit.
