It was positioned on the southern margin of the Xing’an-Mongolian Orogenic Belt, an integral component of the eastern Central Asian Orogenic Belt, before the Mesozoic. This area has been located at the intersection of the Daxing’an-Taihang and Abaga-Chifeng faults since the Mesozoic. Lower Paleozoic quartz schist, Carboniferous and Permian sandstones interlayered with slates, and Jurassic rhyolitic volcaniclastic rocks can be seen in this area. Moreover, there is a minor occurrence of Cretaceous mudstone and sandstone. A notable feature is the widespread occurrence of the Upper Pliocene Baogedawula Formation, characterized by its earthy yellow and brick-red sandy mudstone, which exhibits an unconformity with the underlying strata. The Quaternary strata are predominantly concentrated in valleys, lakes, and depressions, consisting mainly of alluvial and lacustrine deposits of sand and gravel. The southern study area is covered by Holocene eolian sand, known as the Hunshandake Sandy Land. In terms of magmatic rocks, Hercynian and Yanshanian granites appear in the area. Since the late Cenozoic, extensive eruptions of basaltic magma have occurred along the NE and NW trending faults, resulting in the formation of over a hundred volcanoes, diverse in type and landform. Neotectonic movements have led to differential crustal uplift, giving rise to the formation of extensive multi-level lava terraces, spanning from the Pliocene to the Pleistocene.
