Iron, unclassified octahedrite (I-unc, Oct)
Fall, July 1914; 18 kg
After falling to earth in the early 20th Century the moderately large Palinshih iron meteorite has been given a belated and minimal description in the readily available English-language publications. The report by Bian (1981) contains several Japanese references, but the report itself allows us only to conclude that Palinshih is an octahedrite.
Witnessed falls of iron meteorites are relatively rare and therefore precious. By the end of 2014 only 49 iron falls were listed with the Meteoritical Bulletin Database at the end of 2014 [~4% of all meteorite falls. Several of the 8 presently unclassified irons in this group have apparently been described in the original language of local inhabitants or other venues. Clearly, there is a need for more bilingual or even multilingual propagation of information about these particularly important meteorites.
