Pennington County spans a diverse range of geologic settings extending from the Precambrian granite of the central Black Hills in a nearly uninterrupted sequence eastward to the Quaternary sediments of the Badlands. The county encompasses the highest point in the Black Hills, Black Elk Peak (Harney Peak), 2207 m; the Needles and Sylvan Lake areas of Custer State Park, popular with rock climbers; the tin-mining region around Hill City; scores of pegmatite mines around Hill City and Keystone; Mount Rushmore National Memorial near Keystone; numerous significant hard-rock and placer gold mining sites; the agate-bearing gravel beds around Fairburn; and fossil-rich areas east of the Black Hills including most of Badlands National Park. The Geological Museum at the South Dakota School of Mines in Rapid City and the Black Hills Institute of Geological Research in Hill City hold significant collections of Black Hills and worldwide minerals and fossils.

Description: As large cleavable masses to 15 cm in a granitic pegmatite associated with quartz, graftonite, sphalerite, cassiterite, beryl, muscovite and spodumene. The material is dark green and translucent. This was the first arrojadite found, but it was not described well and given the name headdenite after the American mineralogist William Headden (1850-1932) who first described the mineral.
