The mountains lie at SW end of SW-NE-trending volcanic zone, the central and more NE part of which have been determined principally from drilling. Both effusive and intrusive rocks occur and the presence of. pillow lavas and lava breccias indicate some degree of submarine eruption. In the central area basaltic lavas reach over 1000 m in thickness, phonolitic and tephritic rocks form small subvolcanic bodies and sills; large numbers of dikes penetrate underlying sedimentary rocks (Harangi & Árváné Sós 1993; Harangi 1994).
45 km long mountain range in southern Hungary in Baranya County, immediately north of the city of Pécs. The mountain range runs in a width of 10 to 15 km from west-southwest to east-northeast, where some peaks reach over 600 meters in altitude.
