The root species name, voltaite, is named after Count Alessandro Giuseppe Antonio Anastasio Volta (18 February 1745, Como, Italy - 5 March 1827, Como, Italy), physicist and pioneer in electricity who invented the electric battery. The prefix "ammoniomagnesio" alludes to the components of ammonium and magnesium substituting for potassium and ferrous iron in voltaite.
