Name:
The mineral was named in honor of Gábor Koller (b. 1975), a prominent figure of the Hungarian mineral collecting community since 1995. He has found more than 30 mineral species new for the territory of Hungary. He was also the discoverer of the new mineral species rudabányaite (IMA 2016-088).
First confirmed ammonium sulfate(IV) (sulfite) mineral.

Associated with kollerite are two other, chemicall similar phases:
- AIS-1, trigonal (NH4)9Fe3+(SO3)6
- AIS-2, trigonal (NH4)2Fe2+(SO3)2.
Both AIS-1 and AIS-2 are metastable phases that break down in a few weeks and a few years, respectively.
