Beaverhead–Deerlodge National Forest is a vast protected forest in the southwestern part of Montana, USA, covering approximately 13,500 km² (about 3.3 million acres). Formed in 2009 through the administrative merger of the Beaverhead and Deerlodge National Forests, it is the largest national forest in Montana. The forest spans a highly rugged and mountainous landscape along the northern Rocky Mountains and includes portions of several major mountain ranges, such as the Beaverhead, Pioneer, Anaconda–Pintler, and Madison ranges. It also contains the headwaters of important river systems, including the Missouri, Clark Fork, Salmon, and Big Hole rivers, making it a critical watershed area.

Geologically, the Beaverhead–Deerlodge National Forest is exceptionally complex and exposes a wide range of rock types and ages. Precambrian crystalline basement rocks form the cores of many mountain ranges, overlain by thick Palaeozoic sedimentary sequences, including limestones and dolostones, and intruded by numerous Mesozoic and Cenozoic igneous bodies. The region was strongly shaped by compressional tectonics during the Sevier and Laramide orogenies, followed by Basin-and-Range-style extension. Glaciation during the Quaternary further sculpted the landscape, leaving cirques, U-shaped valleys, and alpine basins. This geological diversity underpins the forest’s dramatic relief and scientific importance.

The forest has a long and significant mineral and mining heritage, closely tied to its geology. From the mid-19th century onward, the area supported extensive mining for copper, gold, silver, lead, zinc, and manganese, particularly in districts such as Butte, Anaconda, Philipsburg, and Bannack. The Butte district, adjacent to and partly within the forest, was one of the world’s most productive copper mining regions and played a major role in the industrial development of the United States. In addition to metallic mining, limestone and other industrial minerals were quarried locally. While most large-scale mining has ceased, its environmental, cultural, and historical legacy remains an important aspect of the region.

Administratively, Beaverhead–Deerlodge National Forest is managed by the U.S. Forest Service and encompasses parts of multiple counties in southwestern Montana. It includes designated wilderness areas, such as portions of the Anaconda–Pintler Wilderness, as well as extensive lands used for recreation, grazing, and wildlife habitat. Today, the forest is valued primarily for conservation, outdoor recreation, and watershed protection, while also preserving landscapes deeply shaped by tectonics, glaciation, and more than a century of mining activity.
