Macskamezö is the old Hungarian name of this settlement.
Mn-Fe deposit. Apparently an open pit nowadays.
The Mn-Fe deposit Razoare lies on an "island" of Precambrian, regionally metamorphosed rocks in the middle Tertiary sediments. The mine is located about 3 km west of Targu Lapus in the Preluca Mountains. The history of mining activity in the Preluca Mountains goes back to the year 1107, the Razoare mine began in 1776. Since then the mine has been, with minor stops, in operation. The extension of the deposit is 2-3 km, parts of it is under an up to 300-400 m thick, mostly sedimentary cover.
The mineralogy of the deposit is very complex and several mineral assemblages can be distinguished, which point to a polyphasic genesis of the deposit.
The ore consists of silicates, carbonates, phosphates, oxides, and sulfides forming lenses of up to 60 m thick. These lenses are invariably enveloped by nearly continuous bands of black quartzite reaching a maximum thickness of about 2 m. The deposit is enclosed in a sequence of kyanite-bearing mica schists, paragneisses, amphibolites, and carbonate rocks. At least three metamorphic events have been recognized in both the host metamorphic rocks and the ores. Themain six old metamorphic assemblages/types of Mn-Fe ores have been established at the Răzoare deposit: Mnfayalite - Mn-orthopyroxene - Mn-magnetite, tephroite - manganese humites, pyroxmangite, clino-ferrosuenoite (formerly “mangan-grünerite”/ ”dannemorite”) – clino-suenoite (formerly “mangan– cummingtonite”), spessartine, and magnetite–pyrrhotite–chalcopyrite–pyrite. These assemblages displayed different positions within the ore-bearing sequence. Its bottom is defined by the rhodochrosite-rich assemblage containing jacobsite, rhodochrosite, and apatite. It is followed by an assemblage composed of tephroite, manganese humites, jacobsite, and rhodochrosite. The middle part is dominated by manganoan fayalite-manganoan ferrosilite. The upper part of the sequence is amphibole dominated, typically containing spessartine, clino-ferrosuenoite, clino-suenoite, magnetite, pyrrhotite, and pyrite. The Fe:Mn ratio seems to characterize both the lower part with Mn>Fe, and the upper part with Fe>Mn, of the ore-bearing sequence.
