A Mn-rich variety of biotite.
A study of Knurr and Bailey (1986) showed that manganophyllite contains divalent Mn, unlike alurgite (Mn-bearing muscovite) which contains trivalent Mn.

Originally described from Harstigen Mine, Pajsberg, Filipstad, Värmland, Sweden.
