The Shire of Sandstone is 740 kilometres north-east of Perth, and has a population of 116 (2013 est.), mainly in the shire's only town, also called Sandstone. The town is 158 Kilometres east of Mount Magnet and 135 kilometres west of Leinster.
The town has a small museum, and local tourist drive featuring the state battery and London Bridge (arch). The shire is 32 882 square kilometres. As a comparison, Wales is 20 761 square kilometres, Switzerland 41 285, and the USA state of Vermont 24 923.
The shire is semi arid to arid, covered in mulga scrub, largely flat, with isolated ranges of hills.
Like much of the Mid-West and Eastern Goldfields regions, the shire has several gold bearing greenstone belts running through it from north north-west to south south-east. The main areas of gold mines run north south through the centre of the shire, starting with the Youanmi area to the south, Sandstone town area in particular to the south and south-east of the town, and the Barrambie Ranges to the north.
There are hundreds of abandoned gold shafts through the shire, and it is popular with people holidaying with metal detectors. Please be aware many areas of the shire are remote, contain no water, people or civilisation. Permission should be obtained from lease holders before metal detecting.
The town of Sandstone sits between Mount Magnet and Leinster, but not on a major highway. It has basic facilities for travellers. The economy is based on pastoral, mining and tourism. The town has a couple of museums, and a natural arch called London Bridge is also promoted.
The shire contains a large number of historic gold mines. A Bendigo based outfit conducts metal detecting tours in the area during winter.
