Discovered in 1906 by Fardy, Symonds and party, mining started in January 1907. Between this date and 1912, it went through numerous ownership changes, options, and tributers.

Western Mining Corporation before 1990, drilled 159 holes to test the three main reefs on the property. These are Kohinoor North Reef, Faugh-a-Ballagh Reef, and the Bull Oak Reef. There are also numerous smaller reefs in the area. A shallow resource was estimated at 239 000 tonnes at 1.4 g/t (cut-off 0.5 g/t). A further small soil resource to a maximum depth of 3 metres, contained 16 000 tonnes of ore at 1.52 g/t (cut-off 0.5 g/t).

Mining started with Elmina NL of shallow gold bearing laterite producing 10 000 ounces of gold. Then a large open pit was developed by Herald Resources in the 1990's.

The mine is about 10 kilometres south of Sandstone, and along a track south of the Brewery and London Bridge (rock-arch) local tourist attractions. The pit has a larger western portion, and smaller eastern portion, joined by a narrow gap. The tailings is directly north-east. Three tiny exploration pits are directly south of the main open pit.

To the west of the tailings by 200 metres is a group of shafts and remnant battery tailings of the Great Kohinoor. At least a dozen groupings of shafts, and numerous isolated shafts can be found in an area directly south of the Bull Oak mine covering a length of about 3 kilometres.

Three maps were located for mines in the area. Hancock is listed at several locations, and historically was called the Hancock area containing several named mines/leases, and the mine sometimes 'Bull Oak (Hancock)'. The lack of consensus between the maps has caused some confusion, however Herald developed a major pit, and this Mindat listing is for the only major pit out of the locations on the maps.
