The Wha Gold Mines Ltd was formed early 1907. It purchased the 10 head battery from the Sugarstone mine, 5 kilometres to the south. Mine manager was 'Jock' Thompson. 7411 tonnes of ore was crushed for 4503 ounces of gold. The quartz lode was said to be 10 feet wide, and ore was accessed via a 20 foot deep open cut. The mine closed after a couple of years.
In May 1908, truck driver Frederick Smith was killed at the mine. It remained unreported until it was discovered the body had been buried without a coronial inquiry. Smith's body was subsequently exhumed, so authorities could rubber stamp 'death by accident with no-one to blame', which was inevitably the outcome of all mining deaths in Western Australia at the time.
