Located 36 km south west of Youno Downs.
Montague Range was also a historic gold mining centre, albeit relatively minor. It is 70 kilometres north-east of Sandstone. Information was only found between 1905-1908. The mines were generally worked by a small party of men down to single prospectors. Mines at the time included Montague Boulder, Montague Monarch, Montague Main, New Years Gift, Mayflower, Rossie Castle, Caledonia, and Yale Lock amongst others.
The Montague Range inconveniently straddles the Sandstone and Wiluna Shire boundary. Mines in this section refer to the southern section of the range, and near the Sandstone-Meekatharra Road. Mines to the north and west will be included under Gidgee Goldfield (Gum Creek) in the Wiluna Shire. Some of the southern pits may also be in the Sandstone Shire but this whole section will also be placed under the Wiluna Shire.
The southern Montague Range is part of the Gum Creek Greenstone Belt. It consists mostly of metabasalts, and irregular sequences of banded iron formation, metamorphosed ultramafic rocks, and minor metasedimentary rocks, quartzite and shale.
