The Lord Nelson Gold Mine is 20 kilometres south-east of Sandstone, and 3.5 kilometres north of the Sandstone-Menzies Road. The Lord Henry mine is 3.0 kilometres to the south. The Lord Nelson was discovered by Troy Resources in 2004, and an open pit was developed in early 2005. The mine closed September 2010.
The pit is about 60 metres deep, and shows two benches. One was for the western pit wall, and the second for the eastern cutback. The Footwall shows in the pit as dark grey rock, the ore is brown, while the Hanging Wall material is light grey.
The ore is hosted in a zone of intermixed high magnesium basalt and granodorite intrusive rocks above a Footwall ultramafic unit. The two main zones of mineralisation are called Central and East Lodes. Both trend north north-west, dip 50 degrees north, and plunge south.
The Central Lode is within the supergene zone, while the East Lode is pyrite-silica-biotite-quartz veining following the Footwall contact.
West north-west striking quartz veins follow the Footwall ultramafic contact. There is also a sheeted swarm of granodorite intrusions oblique to the north north-west trend of the ore envelope.
Gold is found in quartz shoots 2 to 3 metres wide splaying off the main ore zone 5 to 20 metres wide. Gold is found in quartz-carbonate-pyrite veins, hosted by strongly quartz-biotite-pyrite alteration in brittle ductile shear zones dominated by the biotite. Gold was mined from the oxide zone with gold and some silver found in goethite, as visible gold specks, flakes, and some coarse gold.
In another section of the source it states Lord Henry and Nelson contains wide zones of altered fuchsite-epidote-silica-disseminated pyrite and minor arsenopyrite, with quartz stringers containing low grade and sporadic gold. It could be difficult to reconcile the two statements without more information.
