Iserlohn (German: [iːzɐˈloːn]) is a city in the Märkischer Kreis district, in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.
It is the largest city by population and area within the district and the Sauerland region.
Iserlohn is located at the north end of the Sauerland near the Ruhr river, in West-Central Germany.
Geologically, the Iserlohn area is part of the slate mountains on the right bank of the Rhine (Rhenish Massif).
The rocks are mainly from the Middle Devonian to Upper Carboniferous periods (about 390 to 260 million years ago).
The mountain structure of the area is dominated by the Variscan Remscheid-Altenaer saddle, the crest of which runs in the west-southwest-east-northeast direction through the south of Iserlohn.
This area belongs to the high plateau of the Märkisches Oberland, which drops steeply to the north.
Here the Lower Honseler layers, which are around 390 million years old and originate from the Givetian/Middle Devonian, come to light.
These crop out on the Honsel, Emberg and Fröndenberg.
In the area of the inner city are the limestone and ore bearing Upper Honsel layers, also from the Middle Devonian.
The most striking rock formation is the Bilstein, on which the medieval town was built.
To the north of this is a band of Central Devonian mass limestone that stretches from Hagen to Balve.
As a result of the intensive karstification of the carbonate rocks, some extensive cave systems were formed.
Of the more than 80 known caves in the Iserlohn area, the Dechen cave is the best-known stalactite cave.
Other large caves are the 850 m long "Emsthöhle" on the southern slope of the Emst, the approximately 750 m long Kreuzhöhle (named after the "Iron Cross" that stands directly above the cave) and the Dechenhöhle.
Also worth mentioning is the Grürmannshöhle in Letmathe, which protrudes 30 m into the rock formation "Pater und Nonne".
Most of these caves have deposits of sinter.
North of the mass lime deposits is a ridge of sandstone and Kulm slate layers (Humpfert, Seiler).
This is followed by the Lower Sauerland heaths, where claystone soils dominate.
The area south of the Ruhr is characterized by ice-age loess drifts and other late ice-age consequences, such as a terminal moraine that came over the Ruhr during the Saale Ice Age, which reached as far as the Haarstrang.
