Malawi became an independent country in 1964, after previously being part of the British Commonwealth, under the name of Nyasaland from 1907.

Malawi is divided into 28 districts within three regions.

Only the district hierarchy is currently used on Mindat.

Note: An amethyst locality was entered into Mindat as being "12.8 km west of Balachardra in Malawi". "Balachardra", however, is almost certainly incorrect. The entry has been relisted as simply Malawi, so that the amethyst entry is now simply shown as Malawi.
