The North Pennines National Landscape is a vast upland region of northern England, stretching across parts of County Durham, Cumbria, and Northumberland. Formerly designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in 1988, it was renamed a National Landscape in 2023 to better reflect its national importance while retaining the same level of legal protection. Often described as “England’s last wilderness,” the area is characterised by high moorland plateaux, deep river valleys, dramatic waterfalls, and a rich cultural history shaped by centuries of human interaction with a challenging environment.
Geologically, the North Pennines are internationally significant, forming the heart of the Alston Block—a structural high composed mainly of Carboniferous limestones, sandstones, and shales intruded by the Whin Sill dolerite. This geological framework gave rise to one of Britain’s most important metalliferous mining districts. From Roman times through to the late 19th century, the region was a major centre for lead mining, with associated deposits of zinc, fluorspar, baryte, and witherite. Since then mining has steadily declined and although quarrying and small-scale mineral specimen mining remains there is no longer a lead/zinc mining industry. The legacy of this mining heritage is still clearly visible in hushes, spoil heaps, smelt mills, and mine workings scattered across the landscape, and it has played a key role in shaping both the physical terrain and the communities of the North Pennines.
