Group of levels and shafts situated on the western slopes of Herdship Fell and working the following veins: Greenhurth, Greenhurth No.1 Cross, Greenhurth No.2 Cross, Annie's and Emmerson's.
The principal level, Middle Level, (for which the grid ref. is provided) was cut below the Tynebottom Limestone and the oreshoot proved to be at its best within the Tynebottom, Jew, Lower Little and Smiddy limestones. Some further stoping was performed in the underlying Whin Sill. Greenhurth No.1 Cross Vein was worked from Bodder Mea Level (NY788326).
The mine closed in 1902 after a somewhat chequered history of ownership. It is said that in the deepest workings, the vein was 3 1/2ft wide and filled with solid ore {lead} and that these wokings were flooded so rapidly that all tools were lost. The mine, therefore, enjoyed a considerable local reputation.
The mineralisation here belongs to the intermediate zone between the baryte and fluorite zones of the orefield.
