Group of barytes mines which were flooded (not obliterated) by the construction of the Cowgreen Reservoir in the 1960s.
Veins worked worked at the main mine were the large Winterhush, Greenhush and Isabella veins. These were exploited in superficial earlier workings. Later development was by way of the Wrentnall Shaft (NY81053053) started by the Hedworth Barium Co., and by this company's principal level (grid ref. supplied). The main period of working commenced in 1935 under the Anglo-Austral Mining Co., who deepened the shaft and drove levels both north and south of it at various horizons down to, and including the Whin Sill.
The sandy shale (whetstone) adjacent to the Whin Sill has been albitised and lime-silicates have developed in argillaceous parts of the limestone.
