Sri Lanka is an island nation in the Indian Ocean, located off the southern tip of the Indian subcontinent. Historically known as Ceylon during the colonial period, the island has appeared under both names in mineralogical literature and specimen labels. It occupies a position on the southern margin of the Indian Plate and forms part of the broader South Asian geological region.

Geologically, Sri Lanka is dominated by high-grade Precambrian metamorphic rocks forming part of the southern Indian Shield. The island is composed largely of granulite- and amphibolite-facies gneisses, charnockites, and related lithologies, representing deep crustal levels exposed by long-term erosion and uplift. Younger sedimentary deposits occur mainly along the coastal plains, while igneous activity is limited.

This ancient crystalline framework strongly controls mineral occurrence. Sri Lanka is particularly notable for its gem-bearing terrains, with gemstones concentrated in alluvial and residual deposits derived from weathering of high-grade metamorphic rocks. Corundum varieties, including sapphire and ruby, are especially well known, along with a wide range of other gem minerals. Additional mineral resources include graphite, heavy mineral sands along the coast, and minor metallic mineralisation associated with metamorphic and sedimentary environments.
