About Star Sapphire

Al2O3
A variety of sapphire that exhibits a star pattern when viewed down the c axis. The chatoyance is due to oriented microscopic inclusions (nanorods) of diaspore (Nadin, 2007).
The Star of India is the largest star sapphire in the world (563 carats or 113 grams). It was found in Sri Lanka in the 17th century. In 1900 it was donated to the American Museum of Natural History in New York, where it is on permanent display (Morris, 2005).
