Grice (1989), page 86:

"Jacques Cartier provided the first written reference to silver in the Cobalt area. On his second voyage (1535-1536) the Indians signed to him that silver metal resembling his neck-chain could be found in the "Kingdom of the Saguenay". It lay toward the north, up a great stream (the Ottawa River) along the mountains (the Laurentians)! Although gold and silver keenly interested the early explorers, Cartier never made the journey."


The Cobalt area was the most prolific silver producer of the region.

Petruk (1971) divides the area into three geological sub-areas – Peterson Lake basin, Kerr Lake Dome, and New Lake Basin.

Most of the activity was in the Peterson Lake Basin, and Petruk further divides this geographically into "Northwest of Cobalt Lake", "West side of Peterson Lake Basin", "East side of Peterson Lake Basin", and "near Peterson Lake".

Description: Along with the 14 inch vein of Stromeyerite Reported in the Ottawa Citizen on Aug 31, 1907, There were also reports of probably Sternbergite as a new mineral being an "amalgam of the sulfides of Silver and Iron" called "gyropyrite" That was reported in the Mining and Scientific Press on Sept 14, 1907 On page 12 of the Ottawa Citizen for Sept 3, 1907. They say the sulfide of Silver and Iron is argentopyrite! Sternbergite and argentopyrite were not sorted out until Quellmalz sorted them out from their pseudomorph Frieseite in 1970. So since specimens are unavailable and Sternbergite more common, it is probable that sternbergite occured but it is possible that Argentopyrite was there as well.
