Oman's mineral wealth primarily comes from petroleum and natural gas. There are some barely economic copper and chromite deposits in the northeastern portion of the country in the Semail ophiolite complex. There have also been about 4,000 meteorites found in Oman (2000 from Dhofar).
Note: Oman is divided into five minţaqat (sing: minţaqah; regions or governorates) and four (previously three) muhafazat (sing. muhafazah: provinces). The fourth governorate, Al Buraymi, was created in October 2006 from parts of Ad Dhahirah region.
