Cumberland County is a county in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia.

Cumberland County was named in 1755 in honour of the Duke of Cumberland. The county was founded in 1759 and was later divided in 1840. The area thrived in the 19th century with the development of lumbering, shipbuilding, and coal mining, but rural outmigration and deforestation led to some communities being abandoned in the 20th century. The county spans an area of 4,271.23 km², with resources including extensive forest land, several mineral resources, and agricultural areas that concentrate on wild blueberry harvesting. The county includes two towns, Amherst and Oxford, and two large population centers, Parrsboro and Springhill.

Melts in its water of crystallization and at a higher temperature gives off sulphuric acid. Soluble in water.

Description: A single specimen found in a vein with a significant amount of thaumasite. Noted as worthy of study by Terry Collett and analyzed by Don Doell. White hexagonal prismatic crystals, associated with light green apophyllite, light yellowish-grey stellerite, and light pinkish rhombohedral chabazite. Raman, performed at RRUFF, did not match any species in database but was similar to thaumasite. Confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and chemical analysis (microprobe) at RRUFF.

Description: The classic orange material is associated with drusy colorless, pearly heulandite, orange stilbite, and less commonly calcite. Sometimes stained black with a very thin coating of wad. Specimens are easily etched by groundwater and often exhibit broken edges from frost damage.

Description: In 2004 some very complex crystals were found in a gypsum boulder. These are quite tiny, perhaps in the range of 100 microns. One of these was measured by Peter Richards on a goniometer. Forms included {100}, {111}, {210} (uneven faces, but consistently present), {211}, {321}, and {10 5 2}. Despite the unusually high indices of the {10 5 2} measured form, the fact that it is a bevelled edge between {210} and {211} makes it reasonable.

The mineral which was collected by Mr. C. W. Willimont in 1892 was identified by Mr. R. A. A. Johnston, but the matter was not, at the time, considered of sufficient importance to call for any special mention."

Found in a gypsum boulder with tiny floater quartz crystals and muscovite in square prisms (apparently pseudomorphing some other mineral). Possibly authigenic.
