Montréal is located on the Saint Lawrence Lowlands Platform, a thick sequence of Upper Cambrian and Ordovician sedimentary rocks. These rocks, mainly limestone, have been quarried since the beginning of the 18th century for building stone, crushed rocks for roads, and the manufacture of lime and cement. This has exposed the Cretaceous-age dykes and sills containing the minerals for which such localities as the Francon quarry have become famous.
Mont Royal in the center of the City of Montréal is a Cretaceous-age pluton composed of gabbro, nepheline diorite, and nepheline syenite. It and the dykes and sills are part of the Monteregian Hills Petrographic Province, as are Mont Saint-Hilaire, Mont Bruno and the Saint-Amable sills east of Montréal, and the Oka Complex west of Montréal.
