The quarry has been inactive since 1981 and will never be active again. It is in the central part of the city of Montréal (pop. over 2.5 million), in a residential area, and owned by the city. It is used for snow dumping in winter. Actually, the quarry could be listed by its city address: 3701 Rue Jarry Est, Montréal. The GPS coordinates are set to this address.
The island of Montréal is overlaid with limestones, which have been intruded by the main Mont Royal (the type Monteregian Hill) alkaline intrusion and numerous genetically related sills and dikes of varying compositions. The dawsonite-rich carbonatite sills of the Francon quarry have a rather unique mineralogy, not found anywhere else in the region.

The recent find of UM1990-28-OHF:Al from the Le Cetine de Cotorniano Mine in Italy provided material sufficient for characterization as the new mineral "nannoniite". Nannoniite is synonymous with UM1990-28-OHF:Al. Nannoniite is very common at Francon and the quarry is probably the world's best locality for this scarce species. |
