Large old mining district (baryte veins with cobalt-nickel ores in copper shale). Located east to northeast of Bebra.

The Central European Permian black shale ore deposits in the Richelsdorf–Nentershausen Mountains formed during the Upper Permian around 250 million years ago. The Richelsdorf black shale (“Richelsdorfer Kupferschiefer”), similar to the Mansfeld black shale (“Mansfelder Kupferschiefer”), is formed as 40 cm thick, bituminous, fine-layered marl.

The mining of Richelsdorf black shale ("copper shale") stopped in 1956, that of the baryte veins in 1963.
