Sediments of late Ordovician, Silurian, Devonian, Mississippian, and Pennsylvanian ages form the bedrock surface of Indiana. Structural high areas are in the southeastern portion of the state (Cincinnati arch) and the northern portion of the state. Igneous and metamorphic rocks are only known by drilling to the buried Precambrian bedrock. Up to 550 feet of glacial drift material covers 3/4ths of the state.
Occurrences of native copper, diamonds (~30 stones), gold, magnetite, pyrite, corundum, ilmenite, marcasite, zircon, kyanite, quartz, jasper, sphalerite, hematite and galena are derived from glacial deposits. Many other reports of igneous and metamorphic minerals are from assessments of heavy minerals from Ohio River and other sediments (see Switzerland County, for example).
