The noted minerals were found in conjunction with a fossil fish dig at a high wall in an abandoned strip mine in the Pennsylvanian-age Excello Shale. The black shale of the Excello contains mineralogically complex phosphate nodules, primarily fluorapatite that can be several centimeters across. Fluorapatite is also a component of fossil fish scales in the shale. Many of the reported phosphate minerals are likely formed during weathering of the exposed nodules. The hawleyite occurs as yellow powdery coatings along joint surfaces, as do some of the phosphates. The Excello Shale extends in outcrop away from the dig, and it is possible that similar mineral suites can be found at other nearby areas. The locality is within the Patoka State Fish and Wildlife Area, and collecting shouldn’t be done with permission of the area’s manager.
