Named in 1956 by Allen V. Heyl, Charles Milton, and Joseph M. Axelrod in honor of Arthur Pharaoh Honess (10 August 1887, Berea, Ohio - 17 December 1942, Pennsylvania), Professor of Mineralogy in the School of Mineral Industries at Pennsylvania State College.

Often occurs as pseudomorphs after acicular millerite.
