Custer is a city in Custer County, South Dakota, United States. It is the county seat of Custer County.
In 1874 George Armstrong Custer's Black Hills Expedition entered the valley of French Creek in the Hills. One of his men named Horatio N. Ross found placer gold in the creek bottom setting off a series of events that caused a great controversy that continues today. Prospectors flooded the area and by 1875 the town of Custer was under construction on land that was part of a Lakota Sioux Reservation.

The placers near Custer were not very rich and were soon overshadowed by placer strikes in Deadwood Gulch. The town was almost deserted but managed to survive and today is a hub of activity.
