A mining district in Southern Scotland that was first active in the late bronze age and finally closed in the 1930s. It is based around the villages of Leadhills in South Lanarkshire and Wanlockhead in Dumfries and Galloway.

Type Locality: Leadhills, South Lanarkshire, Scotland, UK Description: There is some dispute about the confirmation of plattnerite from the Leadhills-Wanlockhead Orefield. Although it has been now confirmed on specimens collected from the Susanna Mine in 2010. It would appear that many old specimens have been found wanting, mostly turning out to be Mn-Oxides or mottramite. Work is continuing to try and locate an authentic 'old' specimen in the Natural History Museum London and the Hunterian Museum, Glasgow. |
