A large Archean gold deposit, located ca. 35 km E of Marathon.
The ores are hosted in highly deformed, sillimanite-grade rocks.

The model genesis of Hemlo includes premetamorphic porphyry mineralization, syn- to postmetamorphic shear zone-related mineralization, and postmetamorphic multistage exsolution and replacement mineralizations during cooling.
