Named in 1902 by Richard Harrison Solly in honor of Heinrich Adolf Baumhauer [October 26, 1848 Bonn, Germany - August 1, 1926 Fribourg, Switzerland], Professor of Mineralogy, University of Fribourg, Switzerland.
Compare argentobaumhauerite (formerly 'baumhauerite-2a') and bernarlottiite (Sb-rich); also 'UM1966-04-S:AsPb'.

The structure contains isolated and interconnected AsS3 pyramids, as, e.g., in case of dufrénoysite, gratonite, sartorite, and seligmannite.
