Name:
Named in honor of Jean-Étienne Guettard (22 September 1715, Étampes, Essonne, France – 7 January 1786, Paris, France), French geologist, botanist and natural historian. He is credited with the creation of the first mineralogical-geological map known (western Europe) in 1746, Carte minéralogique du Canada et de la Louisiane (Eastern Canada and USA) in 1752, followed by the Atlas minéralogique de la France (with Lavoisier) in 1767, and the Carte minéralogique de la France in 1784. Guettard was a member of the Académie des Sciences from 1743 and is the author of La minéralogie du Dauphiné (1782).

HNO3 tarnishes guettardite black. KOH tarnishes it iridescent, leaving a flat brownish grey colour (as with twinnite). Reactions with other standard reagents are negative.
