Named in honour of Thomas Sterry Hunt (5 September 1826, Norwich, Connecticut, USA - 12 February 1892, New York City, New York, USA), chemist and a pioneer of Canadian mineralogy. Hunt was the first chemist and later mineralogist on the staff of the Geological Survey of Canada, and the co-author of Geology of Canada (1863).
Black, metallic rod-like crystals, also massive.

Closely related to parasterryite.
The Ag analogue of ciriottiite.
