Norberg Municipality (Norbergs kommun) is a municipality in Västmanland County in central Sweden. Its seat is located in the town of Norberg.

The area, located within Bergslagen, the mining district of central Sweden, has historically been a mining area directed at iron. In the 1970s, archeological finds traced the blast furnace in Lapphyttan to the 12th century, predating the earlier known with 300 years.

The Norberg Mines have long been one of the most important iron ore mining areas in Sweden. It has long been known that mining started more than 700 years ago, perhaps even as early as the 12th century. At Lapphyttan scientists have found the site of an old blast furnace with parts dating back (using carbon dating) to the early 13th century and proven that local people at the time had the technological competence to run it.

The Norberg district consists of an extensively mineralised felsic metavolcanic succession, featuring different types of iron ± manganese oxide and subordinate sulphide mineralisation. These are mainly hosted within folded volcanic-associated carbonate horizons occurring parallel to the main tectonic fabric. The ore-bearing sequence in the east makes up a larger S-shaped pattern. The largest zone with Mg-Fe-altered volcanic rocks mainly occupies the central part of the district within a lower stratigraphic position. The partly skarn-altered carbonate horizons, in turn, occur in the upper part of the stratigraphy. To the northwest of Norberg, subvolcanic/hypabyssal to supracrustal meta-dacitic to meta-andesitic rocks, as well as siliciclastic metasedimentary rocks occur in the lower part of the stratigraphy.

Although the last mine closed about 30 years ago, there is plenty of ore left in the ground.

Description: The composition of the various grains and crystals of allanite group minerals are of an intermediate composition between dissakisite-(Ce), dollaseite-(Ce) and allanite-(Ce). Jansson (2001) distinguishes between dissakisite-(Ce) and dollaseite-(Ce) based on paragenesis. Small, anhedral grains and masses embedded in tremolite and larger tabular crystals embedded in calcite lenses within the tremolite are considered to be dissakisite-(Ce), whereas the material embedded in the dolomite marble associated with norbergite and magnetite is considered to be dollaseite-(Ce). The analytical basis for this distinction is quite slim.
