The Östanmossa deposit is the type locality for dollaseite-(Ce), arrheniusite-(Ce), and norbergite.

The Östanmossa mine produced iron ore from a skarn in the period from 1859 to 1934. The mine is worked to a depth of 114.9m. The Östanmossa mine is a Bastnäs-type REE deposit, belonging to the subtype (2) of Sahlström (Norberg type) in that it is enriched in heavy REE (HREE), Y, Mg, Ca, and F. The REE deposits are hosted in skarns associated with marble horizons in a strongly Na, K, and/or Mg-altered, metavolcanic succession.

The Östanmossa mines consist of a narrow zone of skarn in association with sporadic carbonate remnants, occurring within a stratified metavolcanic sequence with minor intercalated banded quartz-rich iron horizons. Closer to the skarn orebody, the volcanic host rocks are to some extent altered into mica- and quartz-rich rocks. The carbonate is a fine-grained dolomitic or coarse-grained calcitic marble, often in the form of an ophicalcite with (altered) humite minerals. The most extensive REE-mineralisation was encountered in the drift Grodorten at the 47 m level, consisting of an up to 20 m long zone following a contact between magnetite-amphibole skarn and a tremolite-bearing dolomitic marble.

Detailed Mineral List:

Actinolite
Formula: ◻Ca2(Mg4.5-2.5Fe0.5-2.5)Si8O22(OH)2
'Allanite Group'
Formula: (A12+REE3+)(M13+M23+M32+)O[Si2O7][SiO4](OH)
Description: The composition of the various grains and crystals of allanite group minerals are of an intermediate composition between dissakisite-(Ce), dollaseite-(Ce) and allanite-(Ce). Jansson (2001) distinguishes between dissakisite-(Ce) and dollaseite-(Ce) based on paragenesis. Small, anhedral grains and masses embedded in tremolite and larger tabular crystals embedded in calcite lenses within the tremolite are considered to be dissakisite-(Ce), whereas the material embedded in the dolomite marble associated with norbergite and magnetite is considered to be dollaseite-(Ce). The analytical basis for this distinction is quite slim.
'Amphibole Supergroup'
Formula: AB2C5((Si,Al,Ti)8O22)(OH,F,Cl,O)2
Åsgruvanite-(Ce)
Formula: Ce16Ca5Al(SiO4)6(AsO3)8(CO3)2Cl4F3(OH)2
Arrheniusite-(Ce) (TL)
Formula: CaMg[(Ce7Y3)Ca5](SiO4)4(Si2B3AsO18)(BO3)F11
Type Locality:
Bastnäsite-(Ce)
Formula: Ce(CO3)F
Colour: Yellowgreen
Description: See photo
Bismuthinite
Formula: Bi2S3
Calcite
Formula: CaCO3
Cerite-(CeCa) ?
Formula: (Ce7Ca2)◻Mg(SiO4)3(SiO3OH)4(OH)3
Chalcopyrite
Formula: CuFeS2
'Chlorite Group'
Chondrodite
Formula: Mg5(SiO4)2F2
Description: Chondrodite is found in an association with allanite-(Ce), tremolite and magnetite.
Clinohumite
Formula: Mg9(SiO4)4F2
Colour: orange
Description: Clinohumite (and chondrodite?) is quite common in the ophicalcite where it occurs as small orange aggregates together with calcite and serpentine, sometimes also together with fluorite.
Dissakisite-(Ce)
Formula: (CaCe)(AlAlMg)O[Si2O7][SiO4](OH)
Habit: massive
Colour: red-brown, chocolate brown to black
Description: Both subaluminous, ferroan dissakisite-(Ce) and Fe-poor dollaseite-(Ce) occurs at Östanmossa Mine (Grew et al. 1991). The composition of the various grains and crystals of allanite group minerals are of an intermediate composition between dissakisite-(Ce), dollaseite-(Ce) and allanite-(Ce). The individual grains embedded in tremolite are rarely visible to the naked eye, whereas the tabular crystals found embedded in calcite lenses in tremolite can be up to up to 4-10 mm.
Dollaseite-(Ce) (TL)
Formula: (CaCe)(MgAlMg)F[Si2O7][SiO4](OH)
Type Locality:
