The Johanna Mine is a skarn deposit worked for iron ore up to 1909. The Johanna mine is a Bastnäs-type REE deposit, belonging to the subtype (2) of Sahlström (2014) (Norberg type) in that it is enriched in heavy REE (HREE), Y, Mg, Ca, and F. The REE deposits are hosted in skarns associated with marble horizons in a strongly Na, K, and/or Mg-altered, metavolcanic succession.
Sahlström (2014) provides analytical data on gadolinite-(Nd) occurring as small anhedral grains in dollaseite-(Ce). The empirical mineral formula can be expressed as (Ca0.02Nd0.57Y0.40Ce0.40Sm0.18Gd0.15La0.09Pr0.09Dy0.04As0.01)∑1.95(Fe2+0.76Mg0.10)∑0.86Si2.06(Be1 .98 B0.02)∑2.00O9.72(OH)0.28.
The Johannagruvan mines comprise a magnesium-rich tremolite skarn with magnetite in a serpentine-bearing dolomitic marble with local ophicalcitic pods and associated REE mineralisation. The skarn body occurs within a folded stratified metavolcanic sequence with quartz-banded, hematite-dominated ore horizons.
