The Åsgruvan mines are likely situated within the folded extension of the skarn horizon found at Östanmossa. The predominant rock type adjacent to the ores is a stratified metavolcanic rock, interspersed with minor banded quartz-rich iron ores and thin skarn zones. Quartz-phyric and partially schistose metavolcanic rocks are present further south. At the 130 m level, significant quantities of calcitic to dolomitic marble were encountered, locally with ophicalcite and rich REE mineralisation containing “magnesium orthite” and minor “cerite” along with predominantly tremolite and humite-group minerals. The REE-rich mineralisation primarily occurs within the contact between the skarn zone and dolomitic marble, and was also subsequently encountered at deeper levels in the mine.
