The place is famous for housing the Royal Monastery of Santa Maria de Poblet (Catalan: Reial Monestir de Santa Maria de Poblet) and the protected area Paratge Natural d'Interés Nacional de Poblet.

In 2006 the town of Vimbodí changed its name to Vimbodí i Poblet.
