The area now known as Burkina Faso was part of French Sudan at the beginning of the 20th century. Formerly it was called Upper Volta. The country gained its independence in 1960 and changed its name to Burkina Faso in 1984.

Burkina Faso is divided into 45 provinces. Recently, thirteen regions were defined.
