Extends over an area of c. 1800 km² and overlies. a similar suite of basement rocks to Vico volcanic complex (Vico Lake), Viterbo Province, Lazio, Italy, lying immediately to the north.
According to Conticelli at al. (1997), the principal volcanological characteristic is the lack of a well-formed central structure, with the activity being spread over several vents scattered across a large area.
The earliest dated ashfall deposits have ages in the range 800-580 ka, with the youngest tuffs dated at 285 ka. However, the most recent hydromagnetic activity dated by Sottili et al. (2010) gave an age of 86 ka.
