About Iron oxideHide

Synonym of:

Hematite, Maghemite, Magnetite

In petrological terms, "Iron oxides" usually refers to the two main iron oxide minerals, hematite and magnetite, and, to a lesser extent, the rarer oxide mineral maghemite.

Careless descriptions may use the term "iron oxide" to describe iron hydroxides such as goethite and other "limonite"-type minerals. This should be avoided.
