Shan State is the largest administrative state of Myanmar, covering approximately 155,800 km². It occupies much of eastern Myanmar and borders China (Yunnan Province) to the north and north-east, Laos to the east, Thailand to the south-east, and the Myanmar regions and states of Kachin, Mandalay, Kayah, and Karen to the west and south. The capital is Taunggyi. Shan State lies at the heart of mainland Southeast Asia’s highland region.

Geographically, Shan State is dominated by the Shan Plateau, an extensive upland region characterised by rolling plateaus, rugged hills, limestone massifs, and deeply incised river valleys. Elevations commonly range from 600 to 2,000 m, with higher peaks in the eastern and northern ranges. The plateau is dissected by major river systems, including tributaries of the Salween (Thanlwin), Irrawaddy (Ayeyarwady), and Mekong rivers. The climate varies with elevation but is generally monsoonal, with cooler conditions in upland areas.

Geologically, Shan State lies within the Shan–Thai (Sibumasu) terrane, one of Southeast Asia’s major continental blocks. The region is underlain predominantly by Palaeozoic sedimentary sequences, including extensive limestones and dolomites, which form some of the most developed karst landscapes in Myanmar. These are interbedded with sandstones, shales, and volcanic rocks and locally intruded by granitic bodies. The rocks have been folded and faulted during multiple orogenic events related to the assembly of Southeast Asia, and major fault systems continue to influence regional structure.

Shan State has a long and internationally significant mineral and mining heritage. It is especially renowned for its gemstone deposits, including jade, ruby, sapphire, spinel, peridot, and other gem minerals, particularly in the northern and western parts of the state. The region also hosts important deposits of tin, tungsten, lead, zinc, silver, copper, and antimony, many associated with granitic intrusions and skarn or vein systems. Coal, limestone, and other industrial minerals are also present. Both large-scale and artisanal mining have been historically important, and mineral collecting and extraction are regulated under Myanmar law.

Historically, Shan State has been home to the Shan people, whose principalities (Shan States or saophas) existed for centuries as semi-independent entities. The region was incorporated into British Burma during the colonial period and later became part of independent Myanmar in 1948. Since then, Shan State has experienced prolonged political instability and conflict, which has affected infrastructure, governance, and mining activities in parts of the region.

Administratively, Shan State is subdivided into districts and townships, with several self-administered zones reflecting its ethnic diversity. Its elevated terrain, complex geology, and position within the Shan–Thai terrane make Shan State one of Southeast Asia’s most important regions for understanding karst development, gemstone formation, and polymetallic mineral systems, as well as the interaction between geology, resources, and long-standing cultural landscapes.
