About Perettiite-(Y)
Formula:
Y2Mn4FeSi2B8O24
Colour:
Yellow
Hardness:
7
Specific Gravity:
4.533 (Calculated)
Crystal System:
Orthorhombic
Name:
Named for Dr. Adolf Peretti, the mineral's discoverer, who is (as of 2015) head gemologist and director of GRS Gemresearch Swisslab AG (Adligenswil, Switzerland).
New structure type. The element combination is unique; other Y- & Fe-bearing borosilicate minerals are represented by laptevite-(Ce) and proshchenkoite-(Y), but their composition is more complex.
The structure contains: (1) two eight-coordinated sites: Y(Ln) and Mn2+(Ca,Y); (2) VI(Fe2+,Mg,Li) site; (3) Si2B8O24 (010) sheets formed by 4-, 5- and 8-membered rings ; in the interlayer space (between two of these sheets) the above sites occur. Boron is replaced by beryllium to a small extent.
