Named sazhinite by E.M. Eskova, et al., in 1974, after Nikolai Petrovich Sazhina (2 (14) March 1898, Yekaterinburg, Russian Empire - 23 February 1969, Moscow, USSR), professor of Metallurgy, Mendeleev Moscow Institute of Chemical Engineering and a pioneer in the Russian rare earth industry. The '-(Ce)' suffix was added later to denote the dominant rare earth element (Nickel and Mandarino 1987).
