The Turtmann valley (Turtmanntal), a left tributary to the Rhone Valley, is geologically located in the Middle Penninic (Briançonnais Domain) Siviez-Mischabel nappe, consisting of a lower polymetamorphic and an upper monometamorphic part. The polymetamorphic part is divided into a lower Ergischhorn Unit (Ensemble de l’Ergischhorn), consisting mainly of mica schists and paragneisses with inlayered metabasites, and an upper Barneuza Unit rich in metabasic rocks. At Minugrat, on the left side of the middle valley, eclogites occur in Barneuza Unit towards its contact with the Ergischhorn Unit. In the upper part of the valley, the pre-Mesozoic crystalline rocks of the Ergischhorn Unit are overlain by the sediments of the Barrhorn Unit, one of the rare Mesozoic covers of the Briançonnais Domain that is still bound to its original basement. Triassic marbles of the monometamorphic Barrhorn Unit embed lenses of Mn-Fe ores at Pipji glacier and metabauxites at Brunegg pass (Bruneggnjoch).
