Named in honor of Georgy Alekseevich Krutov (Георгий Алексеевич Крутов) (24 April 1902, Lytinko, Solnechnogorsk, Moscow, Russian Empire - 11 December 1989, USSR), Professor, Department of Mineralogy, Moscow State University. He specialized in the field of geology, mineralogy, and geochemistry of nickel-cobalt. He was awarded the 1961 A.E. Fersman prize.

Probably a member of the Pyrite Group (Strunz and Nickel, 2001). Synthetic NiAs2 has a pyrite-type structure (Munson, 1968).
